Anyone who has moved house knows what an extremely stressful event it can be. If there is still a huge amount of packing and sorting to do on moving day, we may not make sound decisions on what to do with our stuff. We will either end up taking unwanted belongings to our new home or dispose of them in a less than suitable way. So, what can be done?

It goes without saying that planning for the move well in advance will help reduce stress on the day. But, what if the thought of going through a house full of possessions is a little overwhelming? If we think of them as one huge amount, it is likely we will procrastinate about sorting through them. Instead, take a small number of items every day to sort through. Place your items in different piles. For example, one pile can be for items you want to donate, one for a yard sale, and another pile for items you will take to the new house. By doing this, you will not only be simplifying, but you will also be environmentally responsible.

Another way to be environmentally responsible is to dispose of items like old electronic equipment, paint cans, used batteries, chemicals, etc. in the proper manner. If these are left until the day of the move to dispose of, they may well just end up in the trash, which could be a hazard.

Yes, simplifying a little at a time will help us have a far less stressful time on moving day.
