We often get very little warning when a natural disaster hits, so it is good to form an emergency disaster plan ahead of time. Doing so could end up being a matter of life or death. With that in mind, here are a few ways to plan for an emergency:

Put together a go bag. Having a bag already packed and ready to go will save valuable time in an emergency situation. Your bag should have enough emergency supplies to last for about three days. Besides water and food, you should include extra medication, if needed, copies of vital documents, and some cash. A small first aid kit is another important thing to pack in your bag. Keep your go bag in a place that is easy to grab quickly, if you must leave the house in a hurry.

Become familiar with emergency disaster routes and choose specific locations where you and your loved ones could meet in case you are separated. Remember that communication is often hindered during a disaster, so make sure your entire household is familiar with these routes and locations.

To minimize the risk of damage to your home during a disaster, make sure you keep up with all the necessary household maintenance – this should include knowing the locations of shut-off valves to utilities, as well as tasks like trimming trees and foliage and cleaning out gutters and downspouts.
