As we discussed in our last blog, it can sometimes feel like a challenge to find someone honest and capable to work on our homes. Of course, there are some workers out there who are very honest and will provide you with excellent service. So, how can you tell if someone will do a good job or if they are trying to con you? The best way is to know the tricks many con artists use – this way you will not be fooled by them. Be wary of the following:

Be wary of seemingly high estimates. If you feel that the quote you received seems unusually high, try to find a few other quotes so that you can compare prices. Don’t feel obligated to go for the first quote you get.

If you are finding quotes online or over the phone, try to avoid giving your address at first. Very often, con artists will raise the price of a job depending on how affluent the neighborhood you are located is in.

If you are having some HVAC maintenance or plumbing done, etc. and you are told that a part needs replacing, ask them to show you the broken part first. If a new one is needed, ask to be shown the new part before it is installed. It is even better if they can show it to you while it is still in its packaging.

Do you need work done on your roof? If so, be a little wary of anyone who diagnoses the problem, just by looking at ground level. Unless they have a drone or the problem is very obvious from the ground, it is difficult to diagnose a roof issue without a close-up investigation.

These are just a few ways a con artist may try to trick you into having work done. Just remember to ask questions and find out previous work experience. An honest worker will not mind providing you with all the information you want to know.
