Every now and then, it’s good to take a look at some area of your home and ask yourself how safe it is. Let’s take the staircase – this is one area of the home that is particularly high risk for accidents and injuries. So, here are a few staircase maintenance suggestions:

How old is your home? If a home is older, the staircase may not meet the current building and safety standards, such as appropriate distances between each banister and equal step heights, etc. Even if it is up to code, you want to check that there are no loose handrails, overly polished wooden stairs, loose carpeting, or any other potential hazard that could cause someone to trip or fall, especially anyone who has limited mobility.
Good lighting is another important factor when it comes to staircase safety. There should be sufficient lighting, both on the stairs and the surrounding area so that each step is clearly visible and well-lit – this is particularly important in households where some members are visually impaired.
Do not forget to include exterior steps on your maintenance checklist. Outdoor stairs are extra vulnerable to wear and tear, so make sure they are not falling into disrepair and check that they have the correct amount of grade.
If you are compiling your list of home-related tasks for 2023, why not add staircase safety and maintenance to the list? It will go a long way to ensuring an accident-free home.
