Too much noise, especially when we are trying to relax at home, can produce a great deal of stress and discomfort, often resulting in a lack of sleep and the inability to work and function efficiently. The problem can be made much worse when the noise comes from a source beyond our control, like traffic or construction outside. Sound tends to reverberate off hard surfaces like walls and wooden or tile flooring. One way to reduce the effects of noise is to add softer materials like carpets, rugs, curtains, soft furnishings, or even an extra couch. If the noise is presenting a real problem, you may also want to try installing soundproof paneling in a room.


Sometimes our own household appliances cause an excessive amount of noise when in use. An obvious solution to this would be to replace them with quieter ones. But if the noise is created by the appliances vibrating, you can use vibration insulators.
Many people find it helpful to add relaxing sounds in their homes to help drown out the irritating ones. You could try using a white noise generator or an indoor water feature which helps to reduce the level of stress caused by the unpleasant noise.
